If you live in Alberta you can get a gas fitting ticket in one of two ways.  First you will want to decide on whether you want to be a gas fitter or a gas fitter and a plumber.  If you want to just be a gas fitter then you are looking at a three year apprenticeship.  While the gas fitter and plumber program is a four year apprenticeship.

There is two types of gas fitting tickets.  Class A and class B.  The class B ticket is the one that goes with the plumbing ticket.  This allows you to pipe anything, but only fire equipment that has under 400,000 BTU’s

The class A ticket allows you to only do gas fitting, but you are now able to fire boilers or furnaces or anything else that is over 400,000 BTU’s.

In my opinion you are better off to get your plumbing and gas fitting B ticket.  You can upgrade to the A ticket, but your job prospects are greater having the dual ticket.

In either case the first thing you need to do is to get a job in the required field.  Find a company that will hire you as an apprentice.  Then you will need to get in the required hours.

The gas fitting ticket is a three year apprenticeship with three sessions of school.  A minimum of 1,500 hours of on-the-job training and eight weeks of technical training each year.

If you go the plumbing and gas fitting route then you are looking at a four year apprenticeship that has at least 1500 hours of work related experience each year and 8 weeks of school each year.
