DIY Renovations Edmonton

As a handy person you can most likely do a lot of renovations in Edmonton yourself.  There are a few things to consider before taking on such a task.  Are you going to do all the work yourself?  Or are you going to hire trades and act as the general contractor?  Or somewhere in between?  Whatever the case there are different levels of skills that are required to do any of your own renovations.

As a plumbing contractor in Edmonton for quite some time now I have helped many people do their own renovations.  When you take on a task like this you will want to make sure that you are the kind of person that finishes what you start.  I did one plumbing job for a client that was renovating their basement themselves.  Two years after I did the plumbing rough in I got a call to come and do the finish.  Wow, I thought he hired someone else, but life does get in the way sometimes.  All the stress this client had to deal with for over two years was not worth the savings of hiring a good general contractor.

If you have not done any DIY renovation projects in the past then I suggest you start with something small like a bathroom renovation.  Do the demolition yourself so you can get a good understanding of what renovations are all about.  Then hire a good plumber, hint hint 780-264-0878, to help you install the bathtub and faucets.

Then install the drywall and cement board yourself, add tiles to your floor and tub surround, paint, install a bathroom vanity, light fixtures and install the toilet if you are feeling ambitious.

At this point you have now had your eyes opened with the renovation you just finished.  Did you like it?  If not, you can still save a ton of money on DIY renovations by acting as the general contractor.  Line up the trades you need for the task at hand.  Get prices, and set up schedules.

Kitchen renovations will require a plumber, cabinets, paint, tile, kitchen counter tops and an electrician if you are moving things around.

Basement development or renovations will require more time, but about the same number of trades.  You may need a heating contractor if you need to move any ducts around.

If you need a plumber on your next diy renovation then give us a call at 780-264-0878
